Volunteer of the Year 2008
March 19, 2009

Rick Jeary
Habitat changes lives.... but maybe not those you might think.
Habitat for Humanity Montreal’s Volunteer of the Year for 2008 has a unique story to tell.
“I wanted to give back to the community,” explains Rick Jeary, “but it appears Habitat has given me far more than I gave them.”
Jeary, a laid-off Domtar employee, clocked some 400 hours in 2008 on Habitat’s Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve site, where a duplex will soon house two new homeowner families. “I had heard of the great work Habitat was doing in places like Haiti and Louisiana. Wanting to keep busy, I went on the Internet to sign on and started working in June on weekends. Come August, I was working four days a week at the site,” he says.
All the while, Jeary managed to lick an addiction problem and to check out if construction was for him. “I’ve always been a handyman. I wanted to see if I liked it enough to make a living of it,” he adds. This spring, after a stint doing volunteer work in Africa, he is planning to sign up for some carpentry and safety courses.
Having come from the streets in his younger years, Jeary is especially proud of having given two families a safe home. Not to mention the pride he now sees in the eyes of 19-year old daughter Stephanie. A little hope does go a long way.

Habitat for Humanity Montreal launches a new home construction
project to benefit two families in need. Join us in celebration and meet
one of the new homeowner families!
18 June 2008
Please join us for this important event on Wednesday June 18th, as
Habitat for Humanity Montreal launches the construction of two new homes
for families in need in the borough of Mercier/Hochelaga-Maisonneuve
and introduces one of the future homeowner families.
Habitat for Humanity Montreal is a community-based, non-profit, faith-based
organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent
place to live. Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners
in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means
to breaking the cycle of poverty. The organization was founded in 1998,
is a member of Habitat for Humanity Canada, and part of a worldwide network
that spans 93 countries, has built over 225,000 homes, and is now building
a new home every 21 minutes.
We are grateful for the support of our long time Habitat for Humanity
sponsors. Without their continued support and leadership, we would not
be able to provide a hand up to Montreal families in need.
Founding Partners and Home Donor:
The Home Depot Canada, Genworth Financial Canada and MCAP have committed
$360,000 over a three year period to help our affiliate buy land, build
homes, and more. Part of their contribution this year will fund one of
the new homes. Each of the Founding Sponsor organizations are focused
on the importance of ‘home’ and are committed to serving
the Quebec market through their core business and through their involvement
with Habitat for Humanity.
Home Donor:
Habitat for Humanity Montreal is also grateful for the continued support
of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH) which is sponsoring
the development of the second unit on the property. For the past 14 years,
CIPH and its members have been important contributors to Habitat for
Humanity in Canada. To-date, they have contributed $5.1 million in cash
and products. CIPH has chosen to sponsor a home in Montreal this year
to mark the 75th Anniversary of the association and its beginnings in
Montreal.
Thank you again for your support and we are looking forward to seeing
you on June 18. |
